About CWE

Community Wind Energy LLC of Door County (CWE) was formed by a group of local residents who believe that the use of wind power can significantly improve the lives of our neighbors and ourselves.

CWE is organized with the goal of educating the public about wind energy and how we as a community can harness this renewable energy resource for the betterment of all.

CWE is committed to developing wind energy production through local planning, ownership, financing and maintenance of wind turbines.

CWE believes that our beautiful landscape needs to be protected through careful placement of wind turbines in appropriate areas.

CWE affirms that a good neighbor policy is the best policy for our county. We also think community control of the project through careful planning is the preferable method.

CWE is dedicated to the concept that less reliance on fossil fuels and nuclear energy will create a cleaner, more sustainable community, reduce our dependence on imported oil, and contribute to our homeland security.
History
MET tower
Community Wind Energy LLC of Door County (CWE) was created through the efforts of the Door County Environmental Council (DCEC). CWE sincerely appreciates the support provided by Jerry Viste, Don Pardonner, Ralph Valatka and other members of that organization.

DCEC’s support included a Wisconsin Focus on Energy business and marketing grant, provided to promote the idea of clean and renewable wind energy.

CWE used the grant in 2006 to fund public education programs about the realities and possibilities of wind energy in Door County.

Since 2005 CWE has held numerous town-hall meetings and over a hundred site visits.

The overwhelming support for local wind energy shows the environmental and economic concerns of the general public.

GOALS

Our primary purpose is to offset polluting fossil fuels for energy production. Renewables feeding the grid benefit those closest to the turbines themselves where the power is produced.

CWE’s immediate goal is to establish a pilot project of a cluster(s) of wind turbines within the Sturgeon Bay Utilities (WPPI) service area.

CWE’s ultimate goal is to supply 25 percent of Door County’s electrical needs with wind power. In reaching this goal, our idea of development supports small clusters of large commercial wind turbines across the peninsula.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

CWE has conducted over a dozen local meetings with citizens, town officials, and special interest groups throughout the county.

Groups, organizations, and schools that are interested in having a FREE presentation on wind energy production are encouraged to contact Bill Utley at 920.333.0523 or bill@communitywindenergy.us

Community ownership means working with the county government and other regulatory agencies to provide a county ordinance that is more in line with Wisconsin state statutes. To this end, all of us need to contribute what we want our elected officials to take into account in planning for a renewable energy future. These deliberations become important not only in facilitating locally responsive decision-making, but also in contributing to a more informed community for all of us.

Call your local town/county representative today and express your support for locally produced clean renewable energy production
