Frequently Asked Questions

How much space does a turbine occupy?

Commercial wind turbines today typically occupy a foundation footprint of 50 feet by 50 feet square at the ground grade. Keep in mind that farmers and animals can and typically do, utilize the area immediately adjacent to the base of the turbine.

Do wind turbines affect property values?

Studies have shown that wind turbines do not affect property values negatively. Two studies in particular have shown that property values have increased for those located adjacent to wind turbine developments.

Is it true that the Statue of Liberty is powered by wind energy?
ms. liberty

Yes, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island have been completely powered by wind energy since 2005.

How good is our wind resource in Door County?
Jerry Kuehn & John H with MET tower

CWE has installed three Meteorological (MET) Towers throughout the county to establish the baseline data needed to secure production capabilities of speed, direction, and wind shear.

CWE is working through a grant with Focus on Energy for these installations and data analysis.

The summary of the data provides critical information on the actual wind resource of the geographical regions around the MET Towers.

Keep in mind that this is early in the study. While the values look favorable for wind energy production, we need to continue the wind analysis to determine the feasibility of a wind turbine project. As time goes on and more data is collected, a more thorough report will give more credibility to the wind resource.

Data sites (WRAP) established in the mid to late 1990’s provided two such sites in Door County. The data measured from these sites indicate wind capabilities similar to those areas in state currently with wind turbine generation.
